Faith Mulira
Masooli, Uganda

Faith Mulira was born over 80 years ago in Uganda, the second to last of a family of 16. Her family struggled to send her to school but through perseverance, she made it through secondary school and later, nursing school.

To support herself and her five children, Faith worked for 17 years at Sanyu Babies Home, an orphanage in Kampala, Uganda's capital. At Sanyu, she cared for those most vulnerable - tiny babies and young children who had been abandoned by parents who could not care for them.

During her time at Sanyu, the country of Uganda experienced significant social and political upheaval. The violence of the Amin regime claimed the lives of many of Faith's friends and family members, and she eventually fled to the U.S. with her children. Here, she found work caring for the elderly and made many good friends. But she never lost sight of the people of her village and their great need for health care services. And she believed fervently that it would be possible to help them.

For several years, Faith talked about her vision. She visited churches, talked to her friends in the U.S. and rallied many of them to share in the work. When the Faith Mulira Health Care Center was dedicated in October 2008, there was no question that it would be named after Faith, the woman who never doubted that building a clinic in Masooli would be possible.
